1. There are 2 different applications. Which do I use?
There are two different food stamp applications:

a. The Combined Application. This application allows you to apply for Food Stamps, TANF, and Healthy Families all together. If you are already enrolled in both of these programs it would be best for you to use the Food Stamp Only Application, because it’s shorter. Print the application.

b. The Food Stamp Only Application. This application allows you to apply for Food Stamps only.

2. Where can I get help completing the application?
You will receive help with the application from a Social Service Representative at the IMA. However, the following organizations can also help you fill out the application before you go to the IMA:

3. If I apply in person, what do I need to bring with me?
The IMA accepts your application with just your name, address and signature. But to complete your application, you need to present the documents listed below. (If you do not have them with you when you apply, you need to mail them within 45 days.)

a. Proof that you live in D.C. You can bring a rent receipt, copy of your lease, mortgage payment, your landlord's name and phone number, or a signed statement from someone you live with or who provides you with a mailing address.

b. Proof of Income Proof of income of ALL sources of income from ALL members of the household (pay stubs, letters from Social Security, VA benefits, Unemployment, TANF, or employer ’s name and phone number).

c. Statement of Utility Payments Bring receipts of all utility bill(s): phone, gas, electric, water. Must include page showing your address.

d. Bank Statement For verification of any saved money. Bring bank statement or bankbook, if you have an account.

e. Income Deductions You may claim dependent care (child, elderly, invalid, etc.) or tuition costs.

f. Social Security Number (SSN) Bring your Social Security Card and if you do not have your card you can also bring a drivers license, pay stub, unemployment statement, or Social Security Income Award Letter as long at is has your SSN on it. If you do not have a SSN bring the number of whomever you are applying for.

g. Proof of Immigration Status Bring your immigration and naturalization papers (not required if you are applying for your children who were born in the United States).

h. Statement of Medical Expenses If you are 60 years or over, or receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits or Social Security Disability payments, bring proof of any medical or dental expenses you might have.

i. Proof of Educational Assistance Bring statements of any scholarships, grants or loans.

j. Proof of any Assets Bring proof of ownership for vehicles, buildings, land, life insurance policies, burial arrangements or plots, and/or other property you reported in your application.

4. Where do I apply if I live in Maryland or Virginia?
Visit the Maryland Department of Human Resources Food Stamp information page to download an application and see a list of local offices where you can apply for food stamps in person.  If you live in Montgomery County, please visit Manna Food Center’s Food Stamps Center to find out everything you need to know about applying for food stamps.”

 Visit the Virginia Department of Social Services to apply online for food stamps or see a list of local offices where you can apply in person.
