DC Free Summer Meals Sites Needed: Help Make Summer a Nutritious and Healthy Experience for Lower Income Children! April 26, 2005

Did you know that community organizations, nonprofits, out-of school time programs, churches, housing complexes and apartment buildings in low-income areas could receive FREE tasty and nutritious meals delivered right to children and youth at your site all summer long? The DC Free Summer Meals Program D.C.’s Summer Food Service Program, makes it easy!

Everyone wins with DC Free Summer Meals:

  • Children have nutritious meals, organized activities, and a chance to interact with peers
  • Parents stretch food dollars and have healthy recreation for their children
  • Organizations can spend more time and money providing programming
  • We all get a healthier, safer community when our children’s physical and social needs are met.

As a Free Summer Meals site, you can receive up to two meals per day for any child 18 and under at your site. Meals will be prepared and delivered to you daily by a sponsor such as D.C. Parks and Recreation. Children do not need to enroll, they just need to show up and eat!

More than 36,000 children in the District depend on free or reduced-price school lunches and breakfasts for 9 months out of the year. For many of those children, summer vacation does not mean “fun in the sun” but rather increased risk of hunger and developmental decline. As community leaders, you may know that children who miss school breakfast and lunch are more likely to be sick, disruptive, inattentive and score lower on achievement tests. Good nutrition is essential for learning in school--learning does not end when school lets out and neither does the need for good nutrition!
