Welcome to the D.C. Food Stamp Diet Challenge Blog!

The Rules

The rules of the challenge are simple. You have $21 to spend on food for seven days.

Begin your food stamp challenge and continue it seven consecutive days in June. Try to plan so that one of the days when you are participating in the Food Stamp Challenge falls on June 5, National Hunger Awareness Day.

You CAN use condiments and spices that you already have on hand.

You CANNOT use your $21 to purchase hot or prepared foods or alcohol.

You SHOULD TRY to avoid accepting food at receptions, parties, friends’ homes, or your place of work.

STEP 1. PURCHASE YOUR FOOD AND SEND A COPY OF YOUR RECEIPT

Purchase your food at your local supermarket, corner store, or convenience store. You can make one shopping trip on day one of the challenge and spend the entire $21 or you can make several trips.

Please make sure to send a copy of your receipt. We want to share what your purchase and how far you stretch your $21.

STEP 2. POST YOUR COMMENTS ON THE BLOG

Please share your experiences as you embark on the Food Stamp Diet Challenge.

If you wish to post something on the blog, please send an e-mail to Jen Adach at jadach@frac.org.

STEP 3. SEND A MESSAGE TO CONGRESS

Please send a message to Congress that this year’s farm bill is an opportunity to invest in The Food Stamp Program by:

  • Increasing the $10 minimum benefit to at least $30
  • Restoring cuts in the standard deduction
  • Allowing all documented non-citizens access to food stamps
  • Supporting working families by eliminating the cap on childcare expenses and increasing the asset limit
  • Eliminating current eligibility restrictions for single, childless adults
