WASHINGTON, September 13, 2018 — D.C. Hunger Solutions is excited to be selected as a charity partner for Albertsons Companies Foundation, doing business locally as the Safeway Foundation, to receive donations from the annual Hunger Is campaign to eradicate childhood hunger. All donations made at local Safeway stores will be used to grow breakfast participation in schools and child care centers and at summer meal sites across the District of Columbia, so that every child starts the day well-nourished and ready to learn. Research shows that breakfast is crucial for children’s learning and health.

“This gift will have a tremendous impact on our program,” said Beverley Wheeler, director, D.C. Hunger Solutions. “We’d like to thank Safeway for selecting us as their charity partner and supporting our efforts to fight hunger. We’d also like to thank Safeway Foundation for its dedication to ensuring that no child has to start their day hungry.”

Nearly one of seven households in D.C. struggles with hunger, with uncertain or limited access to, or ability to buy, nutritionally adequate and safe food. D.C. Hunger Solutions works to end hunger in the nation’s capital by increasing participation in all federal nutrition programs and advocating for better public policies to end hunger and poverty.

Hunger Is, a charitable program of Safeway Foundation, is designed to build awareness and raise funds in an effort to eradicate childhood hunger in America. Funds raised through Hunger Is focus on adding breakfasts in and out of school through federal nutrition programs and other means focused on combating childhood hunger and improving other health-related outcomes.

“It’s an honor to support the work of D.C. Hunger Solutions. Every day we learn about organizations that go above and beyond to help people in need,” said Tom Lofland, President, Safeway Eastern Division. “Such selfless dedication makes our communities better places to live and work.”

Anyone wishing to support D.C. Hunger Solutions through this program can simply go to participating Safeway stores and make a donation to the Hunger Is program at checkout between now and September 30.

@DCHunger is deeply disappointed that full funding is not being implemented for Give SNAP a Raise, eliminating much-needed additional SNAP benefits for individuals and families with low incomes in the District. Read our full statement: https://t.co/FjAxeGD7Aa
